The high priority given to scientific endeavor and research is underlined by the presence of three Max Planck Institutes, the University's own technology transfer unit and a wide variety of other research institutions. Areas of economic growth include medical technology, software development, biotechnology, molecular biology, nanotechnology and environmental analysis.

Traditionally a center of industry, Reutlingen – with a population of more than 100,000 – is now the largest business center between Stuttgart and Lake Constance. As well as mechanical engineering and electrotechnology, commercial and business services play a key role in the tertiary sector.
